If you ask any New Yorker what’s a local favourite in the city, it would be The Halal Guys, a famous food cart that serves up halal rice bowls.

Although we’re homebound by the COVID-19 Pandemic, you can still get a taste of the dish at Overrice – a Muslim-owned eatery along Arab Street that serves rice bowls, falafel, pita pockets and more inspired by The Halal Guys.

Space & Ambience

A 15-minute walk from Bugis MRT, Overrice has a fast-casual setting with a silhouette of the NYC skyline on the walls.

Although I didn’t manage to dine in as Phase 2 HA was still ongoing, the space gives off a youthful vibe that I would bring my friends to eat at.

Food

Of course, I tried Overrice’s Pulled Beef Bowl ($10.90) that consists of a generous loud of pulled beef, soft pita bread, a combi of diced tomatoes and sliced lettuce that’s served on a warm bed of scented basmati rice.

The key point of the dish has to be the mysterious ‘white sauce’ which is to be drizzled over the bowl.

When I tell you I fell in love with this dish, I wasn’t joking. The pulled beef is well seasoned with hints of spice, and it’s best stuffed inside the pita bread for maximum comfort. The basmati rice is fragrant, yet it balances its flavours to not overshadow the pulled beef.

I couldn’t resist ordering the Spicy Popcorn Chicken ($7) that’s drizzled with this creamy sauce and perfect for sharing. The bite-sized breaded chicken is juicy and retains its crispiness even after delivery. My only complaint would be the sauce is a bit heavy and jelat for my liking, especially after eating the rice bowl.

Overall, I give Overrice the following rating:

Food: 4.5/5
