From New York to Singapore
Overrice brings the New York street cart dining experience halfway across the world to a vibrant and unpretentious café along Sultan Gate – Singapore’s trendy, hipster district of Kampong Glam. This contemporary, Muslim-owned eatery amassed fans from all over the country through their signature hearty, affordable rice bowls, and edgy restaurant vibes.
Inspired by the Mediterranean food cart at the corner of 53rd Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, Overrice’s lively space has an abstract and colourful illustration of New York by a local graffiti artist.
The Food
Overrice offers freshly prepared all-in-one bowls with a choice of grain-fed beef, grilled chicken, wagyu, salmon and plant-based options, falafel and tempeh. It is served over seasoned basmati rice, with freshly baked pita bread and mixed salad tucked neatly on the side.
“Not all rice bowls are created equally,” acclaims the culinary team at Overrice. The word “Basmati”, literally meaning “fragrant” and is fittingly so as the aromatic basmati rice is cooked with over 9 ingredients and herbs in the perfect ratio. This quality, long grain rice allows the ingredients and sauces to coat each grain for maximum flavour, resulting in extra fluffy rice that bursts with aroma in every grain.
Aside from the expertly prepared versions of Mediterranean rice bowls, Overrice’s expanded menu includes pita pockets (a lighter version of the same variety), tacos and pita burgers.
The pitas are baked fresh daily and combination of the chewy pita bread with the fresh, crisp vegetables and savoury meats or falafel offers a balanced and enjoyable eating experience.
The highlight of the whole Overrice experience are the two sauces that accompany each meal — the elusive and tangy white sauce, and a fiery hot chilli sauce blend. Though the actual recipes remain secret, we’ve got them committed to memory and down to a science — freshly prepared by hand and bottled daily with no preservatives added.
Every detail has been thought out — our to-go food packaging is made from reclaimed and rapidly renewable sugarcane pulp, (a by-product of the sugar refining industry that remains after the juice has been extracted) a resource that would otherwise be discarded and burned. As an added bonus, our bowls are microwave-safe, making reheating convenient.
Overrice has also been active in donating proceeds to a number of charities, as we feel community focus is an important element of our business.
“We want to make Overrice’s streets-of-NYC dining experience accessible to everyone who is looking for a balanced, satisfying meal in a cozy space with a casual vibe — working professionals and students in the day, families in the evening, and those out on the town after dark.”
